How To Take A Quokka Selfie

The Quokka is said to be the happiest animal on Earth. This smiling marsupial is found in Western Australia, on Rottnest Island, and is great at taking selfies! Tourists come from all over the world to get their quokka selfie, and let’s be honest, I was no exception. However, the art of the quokka selfie is not as easy as it looks. Below are seven steps to help you take a quokka selfie:

Step One: Visit Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is an island off the coast of Western Australia, located 18 kilometres west of Fremantle. Besides being home to the famous Quokka, this is one of Australia’s most beautiful islands, with crystal clear turquoise waters and spectacular scenery.

Step Two: Find A Quokka

Although this small island is home to thousands of wild quokkas, they are actually quite hard to find at first. Getting off the ferry, don’t expect to be greeted by a group of quokkas, these little guys are nocturnal and tend sleep during the day.

Step Three: Skip The Grumpy Quokkas

As I said, quokkas are nocturnal and like to sleep during the day. So when you do stumble upon one, chances are they have just woken up from a nap and are very grumpy. Warning: grumpy quokkas do not like to take selfies.

Step Four: Find A Friendly Quokka

The key to taking an amazing quokka selfie is finding a quokka who is extremely friendly. I have a feeling tourists were feeding this guy because when he saw me he sprinted towards me and started jumping on me. Feeding or touching the quokkas can lead to on the spot fines and hurt the animals… but I can’t help if the quokka touches me!

Step Five: Know Your Lighting

Any good selfie taker knows that lighting is everything. But strangely, even though quokkas take tons of selfies, they don’t quite seem to know this. So it’s up to you to try to maneuver your quokka into the right position unless you want to end up with a selfie like this.

Step Six: Commitment Is Key

If you are truly committed to taking the perfect quokka selfie you are going to have to do whatever it takes, which could mean anything from jumping in a bush to taking one million photos before getting a good one.

Step Seven: Ask A Friend To Take Your Picture

Even the friendliest of quokkas are a little ADHD. Snapping that photo before they run away or get distracted can sometimes be impossible and getting them to look at the camera is pure luck. When all else fails grab a friend and get them to take a candid picture.
